I am a professor of complex systems, political
science, and economics at the University of Michigan. I am also
an external faculty member at the Santa Fe Institute and a senior
research scientist at the Institute for Social Research at
Michigan and associate director of the Center for the Study of
Complex Systems at Michigan as well as a member of the Michigan
Society of Fellows. Previously, I was a professor at the
California Institute of Technology and at the University of
Iowa.
Currently, I consult for Yahoo! and The
Kellogg Foundation on issues related to market performance and
education.
My current research focuses on diversity,
complexity, and culture. I have recently written two books (shown
to the left). Click on either book to learn more. Here is a brief
summary of each book:
- The Difference consists of
an overview of my research on diversity. In the book, I show why
diversity in how people think produces benefits. In some cases,
collective diversity matters more than individual ability. The
book's web site contains links to powerpoint presentations,
podcast interviews, book reviews, and book tour information.
- Complex Adaptive Systems
provides an accessible introduction into the ideas, models, and
concepts related to complexity. This book summarizes research by
complexity scholars in the social sciences. This book is intended
for people interested in understanding the basics of complex
adaptive sytems.
