This conference would not have been possible without the invaluable help of a number of people and institutions. First we wish to thank Ernst and Young and SENCORP for their generous contributions. Additional support was provided by The Sante Fe Institute, by the University of Michigan's Program for the Study of Complex Systems (PSCS), under the directorship of Robert Savit, and by UM's Center for the Study of Complex Systems (CSCS, the offspring of PSCS), under the directorship of Carl Simon.
Robert Savit provided encouragement and sound advice throughout this endeavor, in addition to supplying other surprising contributions. Current members of the BACH group (Arthur Burks, Robert Axelrod, Michael Cohen, Carl Simon) also provided encouragement and advice. Kathy Richards of PSCS/CSCS was indefatigable in her work on this conference, sending mail, reading mail, arranging resources for the events and in general making sure the trains all ran on time. Joshua Green assisted in providing computer resources and in helping print various papers submitted for these proceedings. Ted Belding and Fred Lehmann assisted in producing the proceedings.
And finally, thanks to all the speakers and participants for taking time from their busy schedules to come to Ann Arbor to celebrate the career of our teacher, colleague and good friend, John H. Holland.
