Changing your Password

Linux

Note: As of 2008 January, we are changing CSCS to use UM kerberos password system, i.e, to use the same login/password you use for wolverince access, your itd mail, etc. So new users note --- you do not need to change your password as described below. Your password will be the same as you use for other UM ITD access (wolverine access, itd logins, etc). Any changes to your UM password will automatically be reflected when trying to log into CSCS.

For accounts created before 2008 January only: In order to change your password, you must first log in to your CSCS account. You can do this by coming to the CSCS Lab during its open hours and logging into an open Linux machine there, or you can connect to a CSCS machine from another Campus Computing site or your own computer.

At this point, regardless of which operating system you are using, run the following command:

$ yppasswd

You will be prompted for your password, then twice for your new password. Once this is completed, your password will have been updated.

Note: We would like to convert all CSCS accounts to use UM kerberos passwords. One advantage for you is that you will be able to access your UM AFS/IFS file space directly from CSCS machines, i.e., your UM AFS space will be just another directory in your CSCS file space. Please contact cscs.admins@umich.edu when you want to convert your account.

Windows Terminal Server

You may have two other passwords on the CSCS network - one for Windows, and one for Samba. Your Windows password must be set manually before you can access Windows machines. Your Windows and Samba passwords are not necessary, however, unless you will be using one of the Windows Terminal servers. For more information, contact the CSCS admins.

To change your password on the Windows Terminal Server (terra): Log into terra via rdesktop (by typing "rdesktop terra" on one of the CSCS machines). After you are logged in press control+alt+delete and click the "Change Password" button. After you have changed the password here you will also need to change your Samba password.

Samba

To change your samba password: SSH into nismaster (by typing "ssh nismaster" on the CSCS machines). After you are logged in type:

  $ smbpasswd

It will prompt you for your old password, then prompt (twice) for the new password.

NOTE WELL: It is very important that your Windows Terminal Services and your Samba password are the same and we suggest that you should just keep all 3 passwords (Linux,Windows Terminal Services, and Samba) the same.

CSCS Mac OS X machines

On CSCS Mac OS X machines, open a terminal and type

   $ passwd -i nis

It will prompt you for your old password, then prompt (twice) for the new password. It will then automatically transfer your new password to all the other machines.
