Software Policy
NB---This page is under revision!
The CSCS Lab primarily provides a stable Linux (Redhat) enviroment, including all the software available using that operating system, e.g., gcc, emacs, tex/latex, TheGimp, R, Grace, and so on. The Lab also provides some of the UM site-licensed software, e.g., Mathematica, Matlab, and so on.
The Lab also has a number of public domain and/or locally written programs that model complex systems of various kinds. These include various general purpose evolutionary computation packages, a few neural net packages, cellular automata (CA) packages. The Lab also provides a few Agent-Based Modeling packages, including Swarm, RePast and AScape.
Because some popular software only runs under Windows, we also have a few machines that are dual-boot, defaulting to Linux but bootable to Windows (2003 currently). We currently have Stella, Berkeley Madonna and Mathematica on the Windows sides of our machines.
If there is (free) software that you would like to see on the CSCS computers, please contact our staff with your request. In general we will try to honor all requests, though we give priority to software that is well-supported and relatively trouble-free to install. We also give priority to software that is general-purpose, or that is potentially useful for many users.
If there is not-free software that you would like to see on the CSCS computers, please contact our staff to discuss your request. Whether we can honor the request will depend on the cost of the software and on how many people might be interested in the software.
